Bangladesh offspinner Nayeem Hasan played a pivotal role on Day 4 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, claiming a five-wicket haul that prevented the hosts from surpassing Bangladesh’s first-innings total. Nayeem, who was drafted into the side due to Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s absence, said adjusting his seam position and focusing on consistency proved key on a batting-friendly surface.
“I tried to bowl in one good spot, and then adjust my variation there. I tried changing the seam position from time to time. My line depended on who I was bowling to. I had different plans for each batter,” Nayeem said. “When you cut off the runs, the batter gets into pressure… That was my plan.”
Bangladesh ended the day with a lead of 187 runs and seven wickets in hand, setting up an intriguing final day. Nayeem expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s chances, emphasizing the importance of starting Day 5 well and giving Sri Lanka a challenging target.
On the other side, Kamindu Mendis, whose 87 runs were vital for Sri Lanka, believes his team can still secure a win if they bowl Bangladesh out in the first session and chase the target in the remaining two sessions.
With both sides positive and the pitch expected to offer assistance to bowlers on the final day, an exciting finish is in store in Galle.
