Bangladesh’s senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin believes that Mushfiqur Rahim’s leadership and work ethic can genuinely inspire the national team, following Rahim’s stellar 163 in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle.
Litton Das Urged to Learn from Missed Century
Salahuddin addressed the media after Day 2, expressing hope that Litton Das would learn from his dismissal for 90 and capitalize on future opportunities. Litton, who formed a 149-run partnership with Mushfiqur, fell just short of a century, sparking a late collapse as Bangladesh slipped from 458/4 to 484/9.
“Litton batted with much control. I think it was his only bad shot in the game. He can learn from this and play bigger innings. I think he will not repeat the mistake again,” Salahuddin said.
Praise for Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto
Salahuddin lauded Mushfiqur Rahim’s experience, discipline, and influence in the dressing room, highlighting his consistent desire to improve as qualities that set him apart.
“Mushfiqur is someone who can genuinely inspire the team. Even though he hasn’t been scoring in the last few matches, his work ethic and character are what you want from a senior player.”
He also praised Najmul Hossain Shanto, who played with a swollen finger and has shown resilience in the face of criticism:
“Shanto is a tough guy and a mentally strong leader. His attitude helps the rest of the team.”
Bangladesh’s Focus Remains Sharp
Despite posting a big total, Salahuddin stressed that Bangladesh cannot afford to be complacent, pointing out the need to win every session and remain focused until the end.
“It is hard to tell who is in the driving seat. It depends on who is winning each session. The wicket is still batting-friendly, so we must work hard to take wickets.”
He added that both spinners and fast bowlers will play key roles, especially if the pitch starts to break up and offers assistance.
“If we don’t get conventional swing, reverse swing could change the momentum of the game. We can learn from Sri Lanka’s discipline with the ball in the last session.”
Summary:
Coach Mohammad Salahuddin is confident that with Mushfiqur Rahim’s leadership and the team’s positive mindset, Bangladesh can remain competitive in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, provided they maintain discipline and seize key moments throughout the match.
