Bell-Drummond, Denly allow Kent to survive late onslaught

Kent Edge Gloucestershire in Thriller by Four Runs

Bell-Drummond, Denly Lead Kent to Victory

Kent Spitfires pulled off a thrilling four-run victory over reigning champions Gloucestershire in their Vitality Blast opener at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol. Despite a late surge by Gloucestershire, led by Ollie Price’s rapid 51, Kent held their nerve to secure the win.

Kent’s Strong Batting Performance

Kent, who were put in to bat after losing the toss, posted a formidable 208 for 3. Daniel Bell-Drummond top-scored with 60, leading the charge alongside Tawanda Muyeye, who made 42. Together, they shared an opening stand of 98, putting Kent on track for a strong total.

Zak Crawley (37) and Joe Denly (48 not out) accelerated the innings in the second half. Crawley’s fireworks included a quickfire 26 from just five balls, which featured four sixes. Denly also joined the attack, hitting four sixes and three fours in his 24-ball knock to push Kent beyond the 200-run mark.

Gloucestershire’s Challenging Run Chase

Gloucestershire’s chase began with a solid foundation, reaching 34 by the fifth over. However, their batting line-up struggled to maintain the required rate, with key wickets falling regularly. Cameron Bancroft and James Bracey were dismissed early, leaving Gloucestershire at 37 for 2.

Miles Hammond’s 38 from 25 balls provided some resistance, but when he was dismissed in the ninth over, Gloucestershire were 61 for 3 and already behind the asking rate.

Price’s Brave Attempt to Close the Gap

Ollie Price played a brilliant knock, smashing four sixes in one over from leg spinner Matt Parkinson. He reached his half-century in just 25 balls, but soon after, he fell to a catch at mid-off. Despite this, Gloucestershire continued to fight back, with Jack Taylor’s 26 coming in quick time, including two sixes.

But Kent’s bowlers, led by Tom Rogers (2 for 22), kept their composure. When D’Arcy Short fell for 14 and Charlesworth was run out in the final over, Gloucestershire’s hopes were dashed. They ended up with 204 for 7, just falling short of the target.

Key Performances:

  • Kent: Daniel Bell-Drummond 60 (48), Joe Denly 48* (24), Zak Crawley 37 (17)
  • Gloucestershire: Ollie Price 51 (25), Miles Hammond 38 (25), Jack Taylor 26 (16)

Final Thoughts

Kent’s all-round performance, from the explosive batting of Bell-Drummond and Denly to solid contributions across the middle order, helped them edge out Gloucestershire in a high-stakes encounter. Gloucestershire, despite a strong effort from Price, fell short, highlighting Kent’s ability to close out tight matches.
