Gary Stead to step aside as New Zealand's coach

Gary Stead Steps Down as New Zealand Head Coach After Seven-Year Legacy

WELLINGTON, June 4 – Gary Stead, one of New Zealand’s most successful cricket coaches, is set to step down as the national team’s head coach after a seven-year tenure. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed that Stead will vacate his position at the end of his contract this month, as the board moves towards appointing a single head coach across formats.

Stead had earlier declared his intention to step away from white-ball duties. With the structural change at NZC, he is now also stepping down from red-ball responsibilities, concluding a remarkable era in New Zealand cricket history.

A Golden Era Under Gary Stead

Gary Stead’s time as head coach has been marked by historic milestones and consistent performances:

  • Winner of the Inaugural ICC World Test Championship (2021)
  • First-ever 3-0 Test series win in India
  • Five ICC white-ball finals appearances
  • Topped ICC Test and ODI team rankings

Under Stead’s leadership, New Zealand became known for their tactical intelligence, unity, and resilience. The team consistently punched above its weight, gaining global respect for their competitiveness across formats.

Stead Reflects on a Memorable Journey

In an official statement, the 53-year-old coach reflected on his journey with the Black Caps:

“There have been some incredible memories across the past seven years, built around an exceptional group of people committed to playing for each other and their country,” said Stead.

“Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson left a strong cultural foundation, and I’ve tried to develop that further—to make sure we’re consistent in everything we do, no matter the format.”

“Winning the World Test Championship and the Test series in India stand out as highlights. But what’s meant the most is being part of a side that never backs down and continues to fight till the end.”

Stead expressed gratitude for his support system, especially his family:

“It’s been an honour to work with some of the best cricketers New Zealand has ever produced. I’m particularly thankful to my wife Rachel and our kids Alex and Libby for their endless support and sacrifices.”

Kane Williamson Pays Tribute

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson praised Stead’s dedication and legacy:

“Steady gave his heart and soul to the Black Caps. His hard work, detailed planning, and genuine care for the team set him apart. He’ll be remembered not only as one of our finest coaches but also as an exceptional human being.”

What’s Next for New Zealand Cricket?

With Stead’s departure, NZC is expected to announce a new single-format coach who will oversee both red and white-ball formats. This move aligns with global trends as teams aim for cohesion and continuity across formats.

The new coach will have big shoes to fill as they take over a team known for its grit, humility, and consistent international success under Stead’s watch.
