In a major development following the tragic Bengaluru stampede incident, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) officials A Shankar (Secretary) and E.S. Jairam (Treasurer) have resigned from their posts, citing moral responsibility.

The resignations come in the wake of the devastating stampede that occurred outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, 2025, during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 victory celebration, which led to the deaths of 11 people and left over 50 injured.

📄 Official Statement

In a press release issued on Saturday (June 7), both officials stated:

“Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we tendered our resignation to our respective posts as Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, by way of a letter dated 06.06.2025 to the President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.”

The press note was signed by A Shankar and E.S. Jairam, confirming the decision was made voluntarily and in the larger interest of transparency and accountability.

🏟️ Background: The Tragedy That Sparked It All

The tragic stampede occurred during an RCB roadshow organized to celebrate the team’s first-ever IPL title. Massive crowds reportedly gathered outside the stadium gates, leading to a crush-like situation, due to poor crowd control and event mismanagement.

In response to the public outcry and widespread criticism, the Karnataka government swiftly:

  • Arrested RCB’s Head of Marketing and senior officials from event partner DNA Entertainment
  • Suspended senior police officials including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner
  • Ordered a judicial inquiry under retired High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha to submit a report within 30 days

⚖️ Public and Legal Pressure Mounts

The resignation of the KSCA officials is seen as a symbolic gesture, especially amid public demand for accountability. While their direct involvement in the event has not been established, their stepping down adds to the growing list of organizational heads taking responsibility for the incident.

👥 What’s Next for KSCA?

The resignations will likely trigger:

  • Re-elections for key posts in the KSCA
  • Tighter regulatory norms for future public events involving sports bodies
  • A deeper look into the event approval and crowd control mechanisms
