Jamie Overton Ruled Out of West Indies Series Due to Broken Finger

Fast Bowler Will Not Be Replaced in ODI Squad with Potts and Luke Wood in Contention

Allrounder Jamie Overton has been ruled out of the remainder of England’s white-ball series against the West Indies after sustaining a broken right little finger during the first ODI at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Injury Details and Impact on England’s Squad

Overton, 31, suffered the injury while bowling his second delivery of England’s eventual 238-run victory. After spilling a fast-moving return catch off Keacy Carty, Overton immediately left the field for treatment. Despite the setback, he later returned to complete his over, heavily strapped, and took three crucial wickets, finishing with England’s best figures of 3 for 22 in 5.2 overs.

At first, the injury appeared to be a dislocation, but further tests confirmed it as a fracture. As a result, Overton will now undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team.

Squad Adjustments and Replacement Plans

No replacement will be added to the ODI squad for Overton. Instead, Matthew Potts and Luke Wood, the Lancashire left-arm seamer, are among the reserve quick bowlers in contention for a call-up. Tom Hartley, the left-arm spinner, could also be considered for inclusion in the squad, adding to the team’s depth.

Next Steps and Series Outlook

The second ODI of the series is scheduled for Sunday in Cardiff, with the final match set to take place at the Kia Oval on Tuesday. The first T20I will follow on Friday at Chester-le-Street, where England will continue their campaign against the West Indies.
