The Frustrating Wait Continues for Mosaddek and Nurul as Bangladesh Favour Established Stars

Despite standout performances in the Dhaka Premier League, Mosaddek Hossain and Nurul Hasan continue to miss out on selection for Bangladesh’s ODI squad, as selectors stick with established names like Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Litton Das. During the squad announcement for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain made it clear that team balance and preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup are top priorities—even if it means ignoring in-form domestic players.

Mosaddek, who scored 487 runs at an average of 48.70 and finished as the tournament’s joint-highest wicket-taker with 30 wickets, was overlooked in favour of Miraz. Ashraf admitted, “As long as Mehidy Hasan Miraz is in the squad, Mosaddek simply doesn’t have a place.” Similarly, Nurul, who amassed 522 runs at an average of 58.00 with two centuries, remains sidelined due to Litton Das’s status as T20I captain and preferred wicketkeeper.

Ashraf justified the selectors’ approach, citing the need for continuity and rhythm for Litton in ODIs to help his T20 form. “We feel that allowing a player to spend more time in ODIs while in good form is ideal… If Litton can play regularly, it will help him carry over the rhythm into T20s as well,” he explained.

This stance has drawn criticism for sidelining consistent domestic performers. Both Mosaddek and Nurul are essentially locked out of the squad because their main rivals for a place are team captains, making a breakthrough seem unlikely. Even so, Ashraf tried to offer hope, insisting both players remain “in our plans,” though “not in the front line at the moment.” He acknowledged their form and hinted at possible opportunities in upcoming series against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India.

For now, though, the wait continues for Mosaddek and Nurul, whose domestic feats have yet to be rewarded at the international level—a situation that highlights the challenges of breaking into a star-driven national side.
