Lionel Messi has reached another milestone in his career. He helped Inter Miami win the MLS Supporters’ Shield by beating Columbus Crew 3-2. Columbus Crew are the reigning MLS Cup champions. The Argentine legend, a World Cup winner, scored twice in the match. His career trophy count is now 46, the most for any male footballer.
Messi’s two goals in the first half gave Miami the edge to outlast Columbus. In a crucial moment late in the game, Drake Callender saved a penalty in the 84th minute. His save ensured the victory. Luis Suárez also contributed to Miami’s success, netting a goal as the Herons secured the win.
The team with the best MLS regular season wins the Supporters’ Shield. This is Lionel Messi’s second trophy with Inter Miami. His first came with the club’s Leagues Cup triumph in 2023, months after he joined.
With this victory, Inter Miami has a playoff home-field advantage. The playoffs begin in late October with a best-of-three first round. If they advance, they will host all their remaining matches. It includes the East semifinal on November 23 or 24, the East final on November 30 or December 1, and the MLS Cup on December 7.
